How does a night guard help to treat bruxism or TMJ/TMD?
When you suffer from bruxism (clenching of the jaw or grinding of your teeth) or temporomandibular jaw disorders, holding your teeth together at night can worsen your condition and lead to headaches, jaw pain, and even fractured teeth. A night guard helps to keep your teeth slightly separated so that your jaw has the chance to relax when you do.
For some people with TMJ/TMD, a night guard may not be enough. A splint that is also worn during the day may be necessary to treat the condition.
